Στην έκθεση E3, η Nintendo έδωσε την ευκαιρία για μια πρώτη επαφή με το νέο φορητό σύστημα, που δίνει τη δυνατότητα στο κοινό να βλέπει παιχνίδια 3D, χωρίς γυαλιά.

Έχει τρεις κάμερες – μια εσωτερική και δυο εξωτερικές – για να γίνεται η 3D απεικόνιση και για να βγάζει 3D φωτογραφίες. Περιλαμβάνει ένα motion sensor, ένα gyro sensor και ένα Slide Pad που επιτρέπει τη ρύθμιση του βάθους του 3D ή την απενεργοποίησή του. Έχει δυνατότητα προβολής 3D ταινιών: η Nintendo ανακοίνωσε ήδη συνεργασία με Warner Bros, Disney, Pixar. Επίσης, έχει δυνατότητα ασύρματης σύνδεσης με άλλα 3DS για την ανταλλαγή δεδομένων και σύνδεση σε δίκτυα Wi-Fi. Τέλος, θα είναι πλήρως συμβατό με παιχνίδια του Nintendo DS.
